Cardiac catheterization is used to investigate the functioning of your heart. It is used to examine, diagnose and treat cardiovascular conditions and diseases such as blocked arteries or valves defects. Cardiac catheterization involves a catheter (long thin tube) inserted through blood vessels to reach your heart. Coronary angiography is also done during the procedure. If required, your doctor may perform angioplasty with stenting to unblock or open narrowed arteries in the heart.
Cardiac catheterization is usually performed under sedation but if valve repair/replacement, or stenting is done general anesthesia is given. The doctor may do angiography, take sample for biopsy, locate blockages, identify valve defects, abnormal pumping of heart, among others during the cardiac catheterization. The doctor can also use the procedure to correct the heart defects.
It takes about an hour to complete the procedure post which you are sent to the recovery room for few hours.
