Treatment of oral cancer
Oral cancer can be treated through surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, biological or targeted therapy.
Surgery for mouth cancer
Surgery is done in cases of advanced stage mouth cancer or recurrent cancers. The surgical procedure depends on the area or part from where the tumors have to be removed, such as Mandible (jawbone) Resection for tumor in jaws while Mohs Micrographic surgery done when on lips.
Surgery is often followed by radiation, chemotherapy or targeted therapy. In cases of later stage oral cancer surgery, reconstruction of facial/dental parts, oral cavity or adjunctive therapy (to assist in speech, chewing of foods etc.) are also required.
It can be given both before and after the surgery depending on your medical case. Chemotherapy is actually the different doses of drugs (via pills, injections, or IV solutions) administered into the patient to kill the cancer cells and also to prevent further relapse.
It is done often after the mouth cancer surgery to kill cancer cells that may be left after surgery. Radiation therapy is also used along with chemotherapy when treating cancer without surgery.
Biological therapy is done to control or destroy cancer cells.
