Aortic Aneurysm Repair

Aneurysm is an enlarged part of the aorta (an artery carrying blood to your abdomen, pelvis area, and legs) that is gradually increasing in size and is at risk of rupture. Aortic Aneurysm Repair procedure treats aneurysm and prevents aorta rupture.

Approaches to Aortic Aneurysm Repair

Aortic Aneurysm Repair can be done via any of the two approaches chosen by your surgeon:

Open Repair Surgery

Involves a large incision to expose the aorta in the abdomen. The affected part of aorta (aneurysm) is repaired with a graft. It is done by Cardiac Surgeons.

Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR)

A minimally invasive approach in which the doctor reaches the aneurysm via a catheter inserted through the groin. A stent and graft is used to treat the aneurysm. Its is performed by Interventional Cardiologist.

Indications for Aortic Aneurysm Repair

  • Size of aneurysm more than five centimeters
  • Increasing at the rate of over 0.5 cm in six-12 months
  • To prevent the risk of aorta rupture and relieve symptoms like pain in abdomen or chest
  • Aneurysm leaking or bleeding occurs

Recovery after Aortic Aneurysm Repair

The hospital stay is of about five days. The recovery is faster. You will be on pain medications and need to keep the incision area clean and dry to prevent any infection.
