Understanding Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is that branch of Plastic surgery where the primary principle is to enhance the appearance of a person/patient. It can be performed on any part of the body with the focus to improve the symmetry, aesthetic appeal and proportion of the part of the body a patient is not satisfied with.

Cosmetic Surgery is sometimes also referred as Aesthetic surgery because it is greatly related to enhancing the beauty of an individual. It includes both surgical and non- surgical procedures and has seen a huge rise in the recent years where many use it as a means to fight aging while many others to modify their features.

Types of Cosmetic surgery

There are various types of Cosmetic surgery procedures that include enhancing the face, hair and body. The procedures are divided into

  • Surgical
  • Non surgical

Surgical procedures

These involve using surgical tools and techniques to enhance the bodily features. They are usually minimally invasive procedures; however, some may require a larger incision.

Breasts enhancement

Breast enhancement surgery is the most common of all cosmetic surgery procedures. A person may not be fully satisfied with her breasts and feel they need to do some changes. Therefore, they can go for any of the following procedures:

Breast augmentation or enlargement

This procedure is carried out when a woman feels her breasts are too small and wants to make them bigger, uneven in size or have changed as a result of pregnancy and breastfeeding. The cosmetic surgeon uses breast implants to enhance them either with saline, silicone gel prosthetics and even fat grafting from the patient’s body.

Breast reduction

Also known as Mammoplasty, a large number of women undergo this procedure due to various health risks. Very large breasts can cause pain in the back and shoulders and cause physical discomfort. In other cases, women with a high risk of breast cancer also undergo mammoplasty to reduce the risk.

Breast lift/ Mastopexy

Women mostly undergo breast lift if they have dropping breasts and to enhance the firmness. Drooping can be due to old age or as a result of excessive weight loss. Mastopexy is performed by removing the skin and glandular tissues and rearranging the remaining tissues to uplift the breast.

Male breast reduction

This procedure is recommended for men with gyneacomastia where the man’s breast becomes enlarged as a result of hormonal imbalance. The surgeon removes the excess mammary fat and glandular tissue and gives a more masculine looking chest.

Facial contouring and rejuvenation

There is a number of face enhancing procedures available today in Cosmetic surgery. The most common procedures are

Face lift/ Rhytidectomy

This is a surgical procedure that helps in removing wrinkles and tightens the facial skin allowing it more elasticity. The surgeon makes incision near the ears and extending into the hairline. He/she then removes the excess fats and skin, tightens the muscles and skin and re-drapes the sagging skin around the face and neck.

Rhinoplasty

This is one of the most popular procedures that a number of people undergo. Commonly known as a “nose job”, the cosmetic surgeon reshapes the nose as per the need of the patient. Rhinoplasty may also be done due to medical reasons when the patient has difficulty in breathing or has suffered an injury due to some kind of trauma.

The surgeon makes small incisions inside the nostril and removes part of the cartilage to reshape the nose and the tip of the nose by reducing the bony hump.

Otoplasty/ ear surgery

Otoplasty treats the prominent ears by setting it back closer to the head. It is performed by adjusting the shape of the cartilage by giving it a more normal-like shape. The surgery is generally performed simultaneously in both the ears.

Blepheroplasty

Also known as eye lid surgery, this procedure is done to reshape the eyelids. It is done to remove saggy eyelids or bags under the eyes. The procedure involves reshaping the eyelids by removing the excess skin and fats to make them firm.

Brow lift

This procedure is done to lift the drooping eyebrows by enhancing the skin in the forehead. It is also known as Forehead lifts and aims at removing the forehead wrinkles and other signs of aging to provide a more youthful look.

Cheek and chin augmentation

The procedure aims to make the cheek bones and chin more prominent and enhance the facial features. The surgeon may place an implant at the top of the cheekbones or under the chin muscle to make it more prominent.

Hair transplantation

Hair transplantation is of great help to those who are suffering from immature hair fall. In this procedure, the surgeon collects tiny hair follicle grafts from other parts of the scalp, mainly the back of the scalp and transplants them in the area where hair growth is required. Tiny incisions are made in the scalp and each hair follicle is inserted to help with hair growth. The duration of the procedure depends on the need of each individual patient.

Body Enhancement

There are several types of body enhancement procedures that include fat reduction, skin and muscle tightening. Some of the most common ones are:

Liposuction

This is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the world. It involves using a vacuum technique to suck out excess fats from the body. It can be performed in any area that has excessive fat deposits such as the neck, abdomen, thigh, hips, buttocks and back of the arms.

It is also referred to as suction-assisted lipectomy, where thin cannulas (hollow metal tubes) are used to vacuum fats from various parts of the body. The surgeon only removes a limited amount of fat from the body depending on the patient and is not considered as an alternative to weight loss. It should only be considered when the patient is a right candidate and the procedure does not pose a threat to his/her health.

Abdominoplasty/ tummy tuck

The primary aim of this procedure is to reshape the abdomen and make it firm. The cosmetic surgeon removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen which helps in tightening the muscle of the abdomen. Also known as tummy tuck it is a common procedure among women after pregnancy or among people who have lost a considerable amount of weight and have sagging excess skin.

Vulvo vaginal Surgery

These are the procedures that help in improving the appearance of the female genitalia. This may include

  • Labiaplasty: that involves surgery of the labia minora and labia majora to reduce elongated labia and provide a more aesthetic appearance.
  • Vaginoplasty- which involves tightening of the vaginal muscles
  • Hymenoplasty- creating an artificial hymen
Buttock augmentation and lifts

In buttock augmentation the surgeon uses fat grafts from other parts of the patient’s body to make them larger. In other cases, the surgeon may also use Silicone implants known as Brazilian Butt Lift to enhance it.

Buttock lift involves removing the excess skin and fats from the thighs, hips and buttocks so as to tighten and lift them.

Non-surgical procedures

The procedures include using non invasive and less invasive treatments to enhance the face and body

Chemical peels

These types of peels help in the treatment of acne, wrinkles, scars and moles. Active agents are used in the skin which causes it to peel and is replaced by a new skin. The kind of solution used depends on the type of skin and therefore is classified into

  • Light peels which are usually fruit, lactic or glycolic acids for treating the outermost layer of the skin.
  • Medium peels are made of tri-choloroacetic acid and penetrates to a deeper layer of the skin
  • Deep peels penetrate to the deepest extent of the skin and treat the skin from the deepest level.
Botox/ Botulinum toxin

Botox injections are a common treatment used to hide wrinkles and fine lines near the eyes and forehead. The chemical is injected in the muscle and this blocks the signal from the nerves which restricts it to contract thereby restricting the occurrence of lines. It is an FDA approved treatment for facial creases, crow’s feet, frown lines and hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating of armpits).

Dermabrasion

It is an exfoliating technique where a rotating brush like instrument is used to remove the outer layers of the skin. This helps in treating the damaged skin, wrinkles, scars and uneven texture and gives the skin a smoother appearance.

Soft tissue fillers/ Derma fillers

These are medical implants that give a fuller and smoother appearance of the face. These are available as gel like substance which is injected in deeper layers of the skin and underlying soft tissues of the face. They are used to remove wrinkles, plump the lips and cheeks, soften facial creases and enhance the overall appearance of the face.

Laser treatments

Different types of lasers and lights are used to treat the skin for wrinkles, scars, moles, warts pigmentation and fine lines. Laser lights are also used for hair removal from various parts of the body.

There are several types of Cosmetic surgery procedures available today. The important point to remember is whenever you decide to go for any such procedures, you should always choose a surgeon who is qualified and knows the profession. There have been several cases when people have gone under the knife and the results have been disastrous. Thus, when done under a qualified and experienced surgeon, Cosmetic surgery can work wonders for any individual who wants to enhance his/her physical appearance.
