Echocardiogram also called Cardiac Echo or simply, Echo is a test that creates images of heart using sound waves. Also known as sonogram of the heart, it is of different types.

Types of Echocardiogram

Transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE)

Most common type that views by moving the transducer to on chest or abdominal wall

Stress echocardiogram

Checks blood flow to the heart. Done both before and after the heart is put to stress by either giving an injection to increase heart beat or having you exercise

Doppler echocardiogram

Checks blood flow in the heart chambers, heart valves, and blood vessels

Transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE)

Gives clearer pictures of heart as the probe is moved down through esophagus to view heart

Why is ECG done?

ECG is done to investigate the valves and chambers of heart based on medical conditions like a chest pain, heart attack, hypertension etc. below are some conditions that the test can detect:

  • Abnormal heart valves/chambers
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Abnormal heart rhythms
  • Blood flow in heart
  • Heart murmurs
  • Fluid around the heart
  • Pulmonary hypertension
