Heart Pacemaker Surgery
Heart pacemaker surgery includes a tiny electrical device called pacemaker that is inserted in the chest to control abnormal heartbeats. Pacemaker uses electrical pulses to prompt the heart to beat at a normal rate.
Heart pacemaker surgery is more advanced and you can go back home from the hospital in a day. A pacemaker has two parts – the battery & the electronics and the leads (two-three insulated wires). Performed under local anesthesia, the surgery involves a small incision in the upper chest. The leads are guided through a vein into the heart. They are connected to the pacemaker, which are programed as per your medical requirement. The pacemaker is then placed under your skin and the incision is closed. In the hospital, the cardiologist will monitor your heartbeat rates and blood pressure to ensure the pacemaker is working well. If need be he/she may program the pacemaker. The pacemaker surgery takes about two hours to complete.
Pacemakers can be permanent or temporary used based upon your medical condition. A temporary pacemaker is usually used after a heart attack or heart surgery.
When is Heart Pacemaker surgery done?
Heart pacemakers can treat conditions of irregular heartbeats called arrhythmias. Biventricular pacemakers or bivents are used in case of severe heart failure. When your heart pumps blood either too fast or too slowly, the body does not get enough blood supply. This can result in fatigue, lightheadedness, shortness of breath and even damage to vital organs.
Recovery after Pacemaker surgery
The hospital stay is of one day. At home you will need to take care of your incisions and the pacemaker implant site. Avoid rigorous exercise for over a month. You should avoid keeping a mobile phone or MP3 player in the pocket near your pacemaker. Do not stand for very long near appliances like microwaves. Stay away from high-voltage transformers or long exposures to metal detectors. Follow-up with doctors is necessary.
