Cost of Hysterectomy in India

The cost of Hysterectomy in India depends on whether it is done as laparoscopic surgery or through open surgery. Depending on the method, the instruments used and the hospital, the average cost of Hysterectomy lies within USD 3200 and USD 4000.

Hysterectomy Procedure

Hysterectomy is a procedure that removes a woman’s complete uterus (womb). In the procedure, either only the uterus is removed (partial hysterectomy) or if required, fallopian tubes, cervix and ovaries may also be removed (total hysterectomy). A woman cannot conceive or become pregnant after a hysterectomy. She will also not have menstrual periods. The procedure takes over two hours to complete.

Types of Hysterectomy

Doctors may perform Hysterectomy in any of the below three ways based on your medical conditions:

Abdominal hysterectomy- Done by an incision on the abdomen

Vaginal hysterectomy – Performed through a small cut in the vagina

Laparoscopic assisted hysterectomy – Procedure is done with the help of a laparoscope instrument via small cuts either in your vagina or abdomen. Laparoscopy is minimally invasive technique now commonly used by surgeons for such surgeries.

When is Hysterectomy required?

Under below conditions you may require hysterectomy:

  • Uterine/cervical/ovarian cancer
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Uterine prolapse (shift of the uterus into the vaginal canal)
  • Chronic pelvic pain

Recovery after hysterectomy

The recovery period would be about two months, after which you can get to normal work. The recovery is faster if hysterectomy is done through laparoscopy or robotic process.

Your hospital stay would be of about two-three days. At home you would be required to take some precautions like taking rest, walking, not lifting any kind of weights like shopping bags etc., and abstain from sexual activity. You would be asked to drink plenty of fluids and increase the intake of fruits and fiber. Discuss clearly with your doctor about the precautionary and other routine measure to be taken after the hysterectomy.

Note (for foreign patients):
