Understanding Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy (radiotherapy/ RTx) uses high energy ionizing radiations to destroy cancerous cells or tumors. The therapy can destroy the DNA of cancerous cells thus controlling the cells growth. It is mostly given in combination with chemotherapy during a cancer treatment. You may get radiation therapy before, after, and during the cancer surgery.
Radiation therapy treatment starts with simulation. Your imaging scans like CT scan, MRI, PET scan and ultrasounds will be taken out. The exact location of the tumor is identified. Your position and area of treatment needs to be exactly same everyday during the therapy. For this, the doctor may use customized body molds, masks etc. After simulation, set radiation dose is delivered to the target area.
Radiations are administered in two ways:
External-beam radiation therapy – Radiations delivered by a machine outside the body
Internal radiation therapy (brachytherapy) – Radiations delivered from radioactive material inserted in the body through mouth or veins
When is Radiation Therapy given?
- When Cancer is localized to one area in the body
- To prevent recurrence of tumors after cancer surgery
- Used as Palliative treatment to relieve symptoms of cancer
