Radiofrequency Denervation is a procedure to treat severe chronic back pain arising from the lumbar (lower back) or cervical (neck) facet joints. The other terms used for the procedure are radiofrequency ablation (RFA), rhizolysis, neurotomy, or lesioning.

Radiofrequency denervation is an outpatient treatment performed under local anesthesia during which needles are inserted on your back with precision, guided by X-ray or fluoroscopy. In it radio waves or electric current is used to heat up the specific nerve tissues and block pain signals. The nerves are usually blocked for six months to even more than a year. Even if the nerves regenerate after radiofrequency denervation, which may take six to eighteen months, your pain may not necessarily reoccur. If it does return, neurotomy can be done again, if required.

After the procedure, you can return to activities within two to three days while complete pain relief from the procedure may take few weeks.

Who undergo Radiofrequency Denervation or RFA?

You will be considered a candidate for RFA only after a mandatory Diagnostic Nerve Block test. If you do not experience much pain relief after the test, you will not be advised radiofrequency denervation.

Those of you having diabetes, heart diseases or taking blood thinning medication should not undergo Radiofrequency Denervation.

Conditions which are usually treated with Radiofrequency Denervation:

  • Chronic spinal pain – spondylosis, post-traumatic pain, pain after a spine surgery
  • In patients of RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy) or CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome)
  • Radiating severe pain at the back of your head and the neck (Occipital neuralgia)
  • Shooting pain on face triggered by speaking, touching, chewing, or brushing etc. (Trigeminal neuralgia)
  • Certain types of abdominal pain
  • Pain due to cancer

Note (for foreign patients):

Besides South Asian countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka), every year, India gets thousands of medical tourists from African countries- Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Ghana, Somalia,Gambia etc and Middle Eastern countries like Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE, Yemen etc. Hence, if you are a citizen of any of these countries, there is good likelihood that you will be meeting some fellow citizens or same language speakers in the major hospitals in India. Almost all the top hospitals have translators for people of these region. Our patient support team is also well placed to assist you.
